missing the point
I saw someone in a coffee shop today reading The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, and while I haven’t read the book, I’m guessing that one of these habits is not “hanging out in coffee shops sipping tea on a weekday while reading The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People”.

Maybe this person works nights/weekends and is trying to get ahead in his/her time off?
a coffee shop is as good a place as any to be reading a self-help book.
....Or maybe the author was just sharing an ironic observation ...or... maybe this person was waiting to meet the regional HR director of Starbucks and was boning up to impress him during his interview for the position of Vice President of Barista Perkiness so that he could have a snowball's chance in hell of keeping up with his sub-prime high intrest adjustable rate morgage for the house he was pressured to buy three years ago due to the fact that his parents were high powered lawers for some industry group and he wanted to show that he could maintain their lifestyle even though he 'bong hitted' his way out of Princton and ended up with a lame associates degree in criminal justice...But you're right chanchow, a coffee shop IS just as good a place as any to read a book or two. Oh BTW, if you need a self help book to be inspried to affect a positive change in your life, you need to get a cooler group of friends.
